Midi Skirt-spiration

I tend to obsess over trends that I inherently cannot pull off. Whether it's due to my body type or simply the recurring issue of my height (still waiting for that growth spurt to send me over the 5'2 mark) there are some things I just ache to make work for me.

The current trend I am dying to pull off is the midi skirt.

In all descriptions of the skirt, it shouldn't really flatter anyone. Cinching at the waist (good), A-line past the knees (bad), and hitting at the widest part of the calf (also bad). But, by some miracle of the fashion silhouette gods (which I can only assume is Anna Wintour chatting away with Grace Coddington and Ralph Lauren) it works!

Although a little more difficult to pull off and style than the maxi or mini skirt, the midi brings a wealth of outfit opportunities, especially this summer and into the fall. While I toil away attempting to elongate my frame enough to pull this off, I have compiled some of my favorite midi skirt looks to spark some ideas.

Summer Wish List

Making lists is somewhat of a passion of mine. To put it in perspective, I think I came out of the womb and probably checked "take first breath" off my mental to-do list. It's my most notable (and endearing? annoying?) Type-A quality.

This list-making fascination has come in quite handy when juggling classes, internships, a social life, and finances (a.k.a how exactly how many trips to the Whole Foods salad bar I can make in between paychecks).

I have now started to make lists at the start of each season of what would ideally make its way into my closet sometime in the coming months. This keeps me focused and also helps me refrain from purchasing items purely out of impulse or because Olivia Palermo was wearing it in InStyle this week.
(The girl's got serious style, what can I say?)

For this summer, my list may not be extensive, but it is specific. It is as follows:

1. A light, draped trench coat

Rachel Zoe via Shopbop // 2 Haute Hippie via Shopbop // 3 NastyGal
Aside from the obvious aesthetic reasons I may wish to procure this item, I also think it will be my first step in owning a real-life grown up trench coat now that I am a post-grad.

2. Metallic Pumps

1 Manolo Blahnik via Barneys // 2 Club Monaco // 3 J.Crew

Truth be told, these have been on my wish list for a couple of months, and only a few weeks ago did I finally bite the bullet and buy the J.Crew version, pictured as #3 here. I have only had them in my possession for about two weeks, but they are already one of my more used summer heels.

3. High-Waisted Dark(ish) Denim
1 Levi's // 2 H&M // 3 H&M
For whatever reason, I don't own a pair of these suckers. I know this isn't the most summer-themed item, but I think that high-waisted denim is the perfect complement to any summer top for a night out. The days may be sweltering, but I somehow always feel the chill enough to wish I had worn pants out.

4. LWD (Little White Dress)

1 Dolce Vita via Bloomingdales // 2 Zara // 3 Urban Outfitters
This is the item on my list I am a little less specific about. To be honest, I'm not sure what kind of LWD  I am after, although it seems I have a sleeveless theme here.

5. Floral Skirt

1 Givenchy via Selfridges // 2 ASOS // 3. Jealous Tomato via Piperlime
Floral skirts such as these remind me of Joan in Mad Men, only instead of strutting around an office, I hope to don one of them to a day at the Saratoga Race Track sometime this summer. The print will also distract everyone from my obviously bleak expression when I lose all of my money whilst there!

So that's my wish list, it is ever-growing and ever-edited depending on my mood and the day. I will plan on doing one of these before every season.
(sort of doing this in the throws of summer, but you can't win them all!)

What's on your list?! What am I missing from mine!?

When Life Hands You A Twerk Shirt...

....you buy it.

And by "life" I mean H&M.

Sometimes you just find yourself in the mall on a Friday night after a looong week surrounded by high school kids slurping their slushies before their parents pick them up (those were the days), and it puts you in a weird place/frame of mind.
This can evolve into spontaneous and idiotic purchases.

This entire post is dedicated to the fact that I now own this:

(lol at my staging techniques to draw the eye away from the fact that my shirt has the word 'twerk' on it)
(Also, not cropped, just folded. Why commit two evils at once?)

There's not much to say other than I've already worn and subsequently fell in love with it.
Ugh. My bad.

Back At It

So, it's been a minute, huh?

Once again, the last few posts have been me apologizing for my amazing lack of care given to this baby that has been this blog for the last year and a half (or so...maybe two years?! More?! Math isn't my strong suit, neither is admitting I'm getting old).

But after having a multitude of quarter-life crises (my favorite phrase now-a-days (a rhyme...should I just quit this and write slam poetry?)) I have come to the conclusion that having something stable like being able to write here will give me some clarity in the next few months of extraordinary change.

I'm a college senior, and while I do many things other than that, (shameless LinkedIn plug...hire me?), college senior is the persona I choose to identify with exclusively as it is my most fleeting of personas and I have to milk it while I can.

I expected when announcing this persona in introductions or casual conversation to be met with the same sort of idealistic comments made when I was a high school senior back in the day.

"Oh you'll love college, just wait" etc.

Instead, I am met with "Oh god, I'm (insert age over 25) and I still am having withdrawals from college""Best years of my life" "All downhill from here!"

And everyone's favorite of all:

"So...what are you going to do after?"

To be honest, I'm not sure, and there have been so many whiney articles out there about the unknown and the future and how it inherently stresses everybody out. While I agree with those sentiments, I have gotten to the point where I am just so overly stressed that I have had a calm wash over me; as if I have just been given laughing gas by the dentist. Although this should probably send off some alarm bells, I am instead relieved that I have some relief from this tireless game of "Who's going to get a job first/where/when" and I am just going to do what makes me happy.

Which brings me back here!

After months of leaving this poor URL all by its lonesome, I am back for some weekly (maybe more, maybe less...commitment issues, ya know) posts! Gear up for some of the same outfit posts and general (mostly fashion-based but you never know) observations, as well as some new stuff coming up!

To catch you up here are some of the Instagrams I had intended to make posts over the last few months, but only got as far as a caption before my undiagnosed ADD kicked in...enjoy!

(Shameless plug #2, follow me on Instagram here!)

What to Wear Wednesday: Finals Edition

Even though I have been pretending to be on a four month vacation here in London, I am, in fact, studying and therefore have the same task of final exams as many of my comrades in the U.S. The thing with universities over here that differs from finals week in the U.S. is no one actually looks like they are taking finals.

Usually college campuses are littered with sweatpants, sweatshirts, and even slippers during the dreaded finals week, but living in a city as big and as wonderful as London is, you pretty much always have to be on your game. Just stayed up for 36 hours to finish that paper? Or in my case, take four final exams in that 36 hour span? Well you best not resort to loungewear!

Because of limited (and ever-dwindling) mental capacity at the end of this week from mental and physical exhaustion as well as emotional turmoil about leaving this island, I have truly been struggling to keep up appearances at the drop of a hat. I have compiled some fool-proof options for outfits that require minimal concentration, sleep, and cares to be given.

Sweater, Shirt, Pants, Belt, Loafers

This first look is for someone who enjoys the "academically preppy" look. Aside from being exceedingly cute and comfortable, you will also be quite warm! By layering a chambray shirt under the adorable J. Crew pear sweater, you add dimension and warmth. The slight hint of gold from the belt and tips of the loafers give a slight air of girlies in this very menswear-inspired look.

Sweater, Thermal, Scarf, Jeans, Boots
One of the most popular sweaters this season has to be the open aztec printed cardigan. This has pretty much been transformed into every size, color, and print imaginable. Luckily, this means they are widely available! And once you discover the ease of a piece like this, you will want to stock up! Add some combat boots with studs to toughen up the outfit and fend off predators who are trying to steal your perfect spot in the library!

Vest, Leggings, Shirt, Boots, Hat
Last, I knew I had to include a fur vest somewhere in here, as they are pretty much the most divalicious and comfortable pieces to wear in the winter (or summer, if you're the star of a 90's rap video). Not only is this an easy way to class up a possibly boring outfit, but it also provides a seemingly impenetrable barrier against the cold, yet overheating proves nearly impossible due to the lack of sleeves! Perfect combination. The beanie was added in an attempt to help out the girls who may not be having the best hair day during finals, such as myself. Throw that on and go for hipster chic and you're hygienic habits will be under wraps!

Good luck to everyone in finals! May the odds be ever in your favor.
