Let Me Update You

So..I sort of got a little preoccupied and let this blog sort of travel a little ways downhill. For this, I am sorry and promise that my priorities have shifted once again and now this blog is definitely in the top 20% of the list, behind only family, friends, health, school, internship, job, and my daily cup of coffee (or two), but it's up there!

Basically, working a part-time retail job while balancing a remote internship, 4 classes, applying for summer internships, all while trying to balance somewhat of a social life, is just a smidge more time-consuming than I had originally anticipated. Nevertheless, I am once again fully committing to this as a fashion outlet for everything I think/care/know anything about.

To make it easier on me, I think I'm going to post more OOTD (outfit of the day) photos, since that seems to garner more traffic, and is a little simpler to do.

To catch you up on some highlights for the past few weeks, I will post some Instagrams, since that seems to summarize my life best. (Is that sad? Whatever, follow me! @meglewis330)

I learned how to make spaghetti squash and it pretty much rocks my socks.

Made some attractive faces while wearing denim-on-denim at work

Shamelessly dressed my adorable dogs up to go on a 10 minute walk.

Waltzed with a ginger on St. Patrick's Day

Got tweeted at by Chipotle (this was a highlight)

And finally broke out those polkadot Madewell pants I have been yearning to wear (possibly too early)

So there you go! You're caught up!

I Blame Nemo.

I blame Nemo (not the adorable fish from the Pixar classic) but this horrendous blizzard for my lack of posts recently. Shame on me, especially with New York Fashion Week in full swing! The holiest of weeks in my world and I have been completely remiss.

To start on my catch-up of the last few weeks (gasp!) we must first acknowledge the Grammy's were last night. I obviously have my favorites,  but I am going to attempt to separate my love for the celebrity and the actual ensemble worn.
This is especially hard concerning Adele. I love her music, personality, voice, etc, etc. and I am so proud she wore something other than a black a-line dress, but as one of my friends said, "she looks like a 70's lampshade" (hey Tad). I wouldn't go THAT far, but I do agree this was not the most flattering nor the most beautiful dress she has ever worn.

Next, to put it plainly, Rihanna stole the show. Girlfriend was rocking some loose, gorgeous waves with impeccable makeup and Azzedine Alaia red gown that, in terms of general Grammy's fashion as well as her usual style is very conservative.

I'm not sure if it was entirely Grammy's-appropriate, nevertheless I am LUSTING over Kailey Cuoco's embroidered blazer designed by Amen.

Honorable mention: John Mayer for taking a royal blue risk.

Menswear Monday starring MObama!

Today just seems like the timing has just matched up well in many instances. For starters, it is Martin Luther King Jr. Day as well as the inauguration for the second term of America's first African-American president. I mean, come on! This had to be planned, the timing is so impeccable.

Secondly, paying attention to one of my previous posts about theming some days on the site, it is Monday, meaning menswear! How freakin' appropriate that style maven Michelle Obama wore a jacket designed by a menswear designer to the inauguration?

Not only does this holiday now have much more meaning and more to celebrate, but we also have something to talk about today! You decide which is more important.

Mrs. Obama wore a silk jacquard (which basically means weaved in a particular way) coat designed by a menswear designer named Thom Browne.
The coat is a gorgeous navy and the jacquard print was chosen to resemble a tie, according to the designer himself. This choice not only created a beautiful piece, but also an extraordinarily appropriate choice for a formal event such as this.

Obama in Browne, 2012 Source
After some careful research into this somewhat unknown American designer, I found out that he launched his womenswear line very recently, in 2010.

Also, this is not the first time MObama has worn one of his designs; she wore a silk and lace dress by Browne's design to a presidential debate this past year.

If you were unaware of Browne's past menswear designs, you would think these two pieces were simply beautifully made garments. However, with the clouding aspect of knowing his past, there are definite menswear defining characteristics in both. Either way, the moral of the story is that FLOTUS kills it always, and pretty much can do no wrong. She single handedly gives unknown American designers their shot in the spotlight while remaining flawless. The end.

Arm Candy

In a society where the “less is more” philosophy really never gets utilized, bracelet stacking has become somewhat of an art form. It was the blogger Leandra Medine (aka ManRepeller) who coined the term, “arm party” when speaking of stacks of baubles on ones arm. Other than my very verbal love for this particular blog, who wouldn't want a party on their arm!? During the day, feeling a little bored, just take a quick peek at one of your limbs, and its an instant pick-me-up!

I have always loved piling on many bracelets, but I somehow always seem to get too annoyed with the clanging against everything (namely, my computer) or jingling noises to wear too many for too long. Recently, however, I have definitely put those feelings aside and have fully committed to rocking a constant arm soirée.

The trick of these accessory groupings is to ensure you are pairing the right colors, metals, textures, sizes, etc. I have been attempting to master some pairings using my albeit, a little excessive, collection of bracelets.
From my Instagram yesterday

Thankfully, I have some aspiring wrist models for friends that took time out of their busy schedules to be photographed wearing some of my trinkets.
All bracelets are my own.

These two examples show that cohesion among accessories works, either by keeping all silver and black or all brown and gold.

Also, a pop of color among all of the cohesion is also very doable and easy to pair with outfits.

This look is paying special attention to one particular more muted accent color by adding slightly blue elements to the mainly gold look.

I recently wrote an article for CollegeFashionista that will be available online on Monday in which I discussed my advocacy for mixing metals, notably silver and gold. These two arm gatherings are  good examples of how it works well.

Here are all of the looks together!

Lovely.

Footwear Friday! Loafin' Around

" Loafers", "Smoking Slippers", "Mocassins", or just plain old ambiguous "flats". These shoes have many names, and as is apparent by the multitude of options out there, many different styles as well. Whether you're into tassels, studs, stripes, or even patent leather, there is a pair out there for you.

Take it from an avid wearer, that I feel infinitely more sophisticated when donning a pair. I also feel as though I should be in a robe, swirling brandy next to a roaring fire in an old Victorian mansion. But that might just be me...

Here are some of my favorites!

Dress Like It's 2013!

Considering we didn't die in a fiery inferno on the 21st, we must endure another new year's eve. Cue the obligatory NYE outfit post:

For this widely accepted overrated holiday, the typical reaction is to dress in head-to-toe sequins because "it's festive!". Now I am definitely not innocent when it comes to this way of thinking, and the not one, not two, but THREE sequin dresses in my closet would be enough proof for the ages.
If you are hoping to avoid looking like you're attending a soiree as your 8th grade self, here are some easy ways to have just the right amount of sparkle for the impending new year.

Dress, Clutch, Shoes, Earrings
First, you could take the LBD route and simply spice it up with accents. The sequin clutch is my reluctant homage to the typical NYE notion, and the other gold additions simply tie the whole look together. Because of the high neckline, you could either go with a necklace or earrings, like I have paired here.
Sweater, Skirt, Ankle Booties, Bracelet, Earrings
This look, I have to admit, is something I basically wore the other day to a holiday party. A sequin skirt juxtaposed against a plain, black cardigan is not only interesting and somewhat casual, but honestly makes the look that much more comfortable and gives the ability to be worn for many hours at a time. Due to the busy skirt, all accessories are neutral and very minimal. The nude ankle bootie will help further elongate the leg, while the matte hammered cuff tones down the sparkle.

Shirt, Pants, Booties, Clutch, Collar
Finally, I felt I had to include something I have been coveting all season; leather pants. Especially in oxblood, these pants are amazing and a good way to stay somewhat dressy while avoiding dresses or skirts. The chambray shirt brings a casual component, and the light colored accessories bring up the festive component.

Whatever you are up to this NYE, get home safe so you can wake up the next morning and make those sweeping resolutions to be broken promptly after like the rest of us!

Trend Tuesday: 'Tis the Season for Ugly Sweaters

UglyChristmasSweater

Granted, it's not a new trend to wear ugly holiday sweaters for the entirety of December, but lately it has turned intentional. What I mean by this, is in years past, the sweaters donned in this merry month were not intentionally hilarious, but simply expected to be worn as they were traditionally gifts from grandma/aunts/moms/etc. However, with the adaptation and increase in popularity of "ugly sweater parties", these sweaters have become a hot commodity at Salvation Army.

In this Sunday's Sunday Styles section of the NYT, there was an entire article dedicated to the expansion of this trend into stores, specifically Urban Outfitters. Instead of holiday revelers having to bargain hunt in Salvation Army or thrift stores of the like, Urban has mad their own brand of ugly sweaters for the modern elf. Aside from this indie clothing giant, there are also websites dedicated solely to these, excuse the british, jumpers!(MyUglyChristmasSweater.com etc)
UrbanOutfitters

The article concludes by remarking these sweaters are best accomplished if the wearer goes "...extremely tacky or very funny". So, if you haven't already, get hunting for those light-up, tinsel-laden, and sequined covered sweaters to wear this season!
